Tape-in

What it is

These extensions are pre-taped and then taped and glued into your hair. Tape-ins need to be aligned with your roots and glued together (using a heated tool that heats up the glue) on either side of your hair. Therefore, it’s important and crucial that a professional hairdresser who knows what they’re doing are applying this technique. Tape-ins will also need to be removed (and possible reinstalled) into your hair by your hairdresser using glue remover. When reinstalling your extensions, you can re-use the same hair extensions if they’re still in good condition. Applying tape-in extensions usually takes about 40 min to an hour.

Treatment

Since these extensions are taped in or glued in to your hair, you have to be careful when choosing what products to use on your hair. You should avoid oily shampoos and conditioners as they can cause your extensions to become loose or slide off your hair. When styling your hair, once again, be cautious of oily and harsh products. However, you can style your hair in any way you want as long as you’re cautious of the roots where your extensions are glued/taped in.

How Long Do They Last?

Tape-ins can last 4 to 8 weeks before they need to be re-applied to your hair, depending on how fast your hair grows. The condition of your extensions and whether or not you can use the same hair when re-applying your extensions depends on how well you take care of them.

Sew-in

What it is

The sew-in weave is applied by following a set of steps. First, your natural hair will be braided into a cornrow. Then, the extensions are applied by threading them into the cornrow/braid using a needle and thread. Weave hair extensions work best for people with thicker hair due to the way they are applied and the fact that they require more hair to mask. This process takes several hours and it’s important to know that since it’s applied tightly this method can put a strain on the scalp and make the hair feel heavy. This is also the reason why this method doesn’t work well with thin and lighter hair. The sew-in process is very technically difficult and it’s therefore important that it’s made by a professional hairdresser. Sew-ins is a very popular method because it’s the most permanent type of hair extensions and most seamless as it’s sewed into your own hair and cannot come off by itself.

Treatment

When you have a weave sewed into your hair you need to moisturize your scalp and the nape and edges of your hair at least once a week. You should use deep conditioning products and it’s recommended that you wash your hair with a special protein to keep your hair healthy. You can style your hair any way you want.

How Long Do They Last?

The recommended amount of time to have the weave (especially if you’re trying to grow your hair) in your hair is 6 to 8 weeks. The maximum time you should have the weave in your hair is 4 months. You should consult with your hairdresser on how long to keep your weave when you’re getting the sew-ins applied.

Micro-Link

What it is

Micro-link extensions, also known as microbead or micro-loop extensions, are applied by looping the extensions through your natural hair. They are then clamped down with a special tool/clamp using heat and a metal bead or ring. The extensions are fixed to small sections of your natural hair and tightened using the tool/clamp. This process takes a few hours, approximately 3, to apply.

Treatment

Micro-link extensions should be washed and taken care of the same way you wash and take care of your own hair. You can style your hair anyway you want and use the same styling products you use on your own hair. Depending on how fast your hair grows, you will need to re-position the extensions every 2 to 3 months, because the micro-beads will move further and further away from your roots and they, therefore they need to be moved back closer to your scalp.

How Long Do They Last?

Micro-Link extensions are considered semi-permanent and they generally last up to 4 months; again, how long they last depend on how well you take care of your hair.

Fusion/ Pre-Bonded

What it is

Fusion or pre-bonded hair extensions are bonded into your hair using different adhesives, for example glue. The process usually takes 3 to 4 hours to be applied and needs to be applied by a professional hairdresser. This method is not recommended if your hair is damaged and/or in a bad condition. The fusion method involves a machine that will glue the extensions to individual strands of your natural hair. When using the pre-bonded method, the hairdresser will use a heat clamp to melt the glue to your natural hair when applying the extensions.

Treatment

You should treat these extensions just like you would treat and take care of your own hair. You can use the same hair products that you normally use. Depending on how fast your hair grows, you will need to re-position your extensions every 2-3 months.

How Long Do They Last?

Just as Micro-Link extensions, Fusion/pre-bonded extensions can last up to 4 months. Again, how long they last depends on your hair type and hair growth as well as how well you take care of your hair.

Clip-in

What it is

Clip ins, or clip-in-hair extensions, are hair extensions that are not directly attached to your hair. The hair is attached to a strain, which is attached to a clip that you clip on to your hair. These extensions come in a strand of countered pieces (you can choose the desired length). The clips are sewed into the strands and you simply ‘’clip’’ the pieces into your natural hair and are ready to go! They usually take 5-15 min to put on depending on how used you are to putting them on.

Treatment

Clip-in extensions are the least damaging to your hair. They’re also the only extensions you can take on and off whenever you want to. Just as your own natural hair, a lot of styling and hair products will damage your extensions. We recommend that you wash your extensions every 15-20 wears or whenever there’s a lot of product on them. The clip-ons should be washed just as you watch your natural hair.

How Long Do They Last?

The amount of time the clip-on extensions can last depends on how well you take care of them and how often you use them. With the proper care and regular wear, your extensions can last from 6 months up to a year, and sometimes even longer.
